iPhone 4 vs 4S vs 5

The budget iPhone: rumormongers have obsessed out the possibility for years. Though Apple hasn't – and likely never will – manufacture a new iPhone just to tackle the economy market, the company has covered that segment nonetheless. The recipe is simple: continue selling previous years' iPhones in decreasing increments of $100.
Rather than complicating its product lineup with an "iPhone Lite," Apple is now selling last year's iPhone 4S for $100 and 2010's iPhone 4 for free (with new two-year contracts, of course). This gives Apple an "in" with economy-minded shoppers and emerging markets – without betraying its premium allure.
So, on store shelves this year, the iPhone 5 is joined by its previous two ancestors. There's no question which phone is the best - the iPhone 5 is a phenomenal smartphone – but is it worth saving a few bucks on one of the older models?
Specs aren't everything, but they can suggest a device's raw capabilities. With healthy grains of salt in hand, let's see how the last three iPhones compare:

Dimensions

Dimensions of the three most recent iPhones
Dimensions of the three most recent iPhones
The iPhone 5 is longer and significantly thinner than its identical-looking forerunners. This means that it's more comfortable to hold, and it practically disappears in a pocket. This is only accentuated by its aluminum back: the backs of the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 are made of glass.

Weight

The iPhone 5 is significantly lighter than its predecessors
The iPhone 5 is significantly lighter than its predecessors
The iPhone 5 could have easily been called the iPhone Air. The two older models feel like paperweights after using the incredibly light iPhone 5.

Display

All three iPhones sport 326ppi Retina displays
All three iPhones sport 326ppi Retina displays
Though the pixels-per-inch (PPI) are identical, the iPhone 5 display gains an extra half-inch of real estate. This ups the resolution and shifts the aspect ratio to an oblong 16:9. Longtime iPhone users may find it strange at first, but will soon appreciate the extra room for apps, photos, and web pages.
Apple also opted for a thinner display in the new model. Combining a layer of touch sensors also brings those pixels closer to the surface. The company also boasts of 40 percent greater color saturation in the iPhone 5.

Processor

The A6 in the iPhone 5 offers unprecedented performance
The A6 in the iPhone 5 offers unprecedented performance
There are noticeable boosts of speed in each successive model. The A6 chip in the iPhone 5 is a screamer, breaking smartphone benchmark records. Though the A6 was originally believed to run at 1GHz, 9to5Mac and TLDToday report that it dynamically clocks itself up to 1.3GHz (it may also underclock too, to save power).
The iPhone 4S still performs well for a modern smartphone. The two-year-old iPhone 4 is a bit sluggish for 2012 standards.

RAM

The iPhone 5 doubles the 512MB of RAM in the older models
The iPhone 5 doubles the 512MB of RAM in the older models
The iPhone doubles the RAM of its two predecessors. This is another factor in its blazing-fast performance.

Storage

The discounted iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 models offer one option each for flash memory
The discounted iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 models offer one option each for flash memory
Though the older iPhones originally shipped in different storage models, the cheaper models sold at present are more limited. The $100 iPhone 4S offers 16GB, while the free iPhone 4 gives you 8GB.

Wireless

LTE comes to the iPhone
LTE comes to the iPhone
The iPhone 5 takes Apple's handset into true 4G speeds, with LTE (where available). Actual LTE download speeds can range from 8Mbps to upwards of 40Mbps, with low latency to boot. It may be faster than your home broadband connection.
The older iPhones are confined to slower 3G speeds, though AT&T likes to label the HSPA+ 14.4 in the GSM iPhone 4S as "4G." I prefer to call it "3G+": faster than other 3G, but not in the same league as LTE.
In the US, Verizon can brag of the best coverage and widest LTE footprint, AT&T promotes its faster 3G speeds and growing LTE network, and Sprint - though its LTE is in infancy - is the only carrier to offer unlimited data.

Battery

Battery life is similar on all three models
Battery life is similar on all three models
Uptimes are similar across all three devices. That doesn't, however, make this category a wash: maintaining battery life while improving performance and adding LTE is no small feat.

Camera

The iPhone 5 camera is a subtle - but pointed - improvement over the shooter in the 4S
The iPhone 5 camera is a subtle - but pointed - improvement over the shooter in the 4S
The camera in the iPhone 4S was a big leap ahead of the shooter in the iPhone 4. The difference between the iPhone 5 and the 4S is relatively small. Apple did improve a key area in the iPhone 5: low-light shooting.
The front-facing (FaceTime) camera also got an upgrade in the iPhone 5. This was likely done to make video calls look better on the longer screen.

Intangibles

Each option brings something different to the table
Each option brings something different to the table
You could call the iPhone 5 the Rolex of smartphones. Its combination of lightness, thinness, performance, and beautiful design make it a significant upgrade.
One key upgrade that the iPhone 4S offered over the iPhone 4 was Siri. In addition to the faster speeds and improved camera, the virtual assistant is the top reason customers chose the 4S over its older sibling. iOS 6 adds to Siri's capabilities, letting it book dinner reservations, check movie listings, and get sports scores.
The only reason to choose the iPhone 4 over its successors is to save money. Considering that in September of 2011, you could have argued that the iPhone 4 was the best smartphone on the market, free in 2012 isn't a bad buy

Story of the world's thinnest woman

This is the desperately sad story of the thinnest woman in the world who weighs just four stone after years of extreme dieting.

But rather than feel sorry for herself, Valeria Levitin says her emaciated figure should be a severe wake-up call for girls wanting matchstick-thin figures.

At 5ft 8in, she should weigh between 9st and 12st, according to NHS advice. Instead, she is a tiny 4st 3lbs, less than half of what her lightest healthy weight should be.

Valeria Levitin is a walking skeleton after years of anorexia reduced her weight to just four stone

Valeria aged 19, on holiday in Mexico. She developed the eating disorder as a teenager and has now chosen to speak out about how the illness has ruined her life
What is most worrying is that Valeria, originally from Russia but who now lives in Monaco, says she gets fan mail from girls desperate to copy her skeletal look.

The 39-year-old told The Sun: ‘I have received emails from young girls who want me to teach them how to be like me.

‘All the letters I’ve had are from women, mainly in their twenties, who see me as some kind of inspiration.’

As a result, she has taken the brave step to speak out about her condition and campaign against anorexia – and says she refuses to teach young girls how to die.

Valeria, here aged 11, believes the roots of her condition lie with her mother, who was terrified she would grow up obese like her relatives
Valeria, who developed her eating disorder as a teenager, has chosen to speak out about how the illness has ruined her life.

She says she wants to share her story to prevent other people falling victim to the same fate, saying anorexia has made her ‘lonely, unattractive and repulsive for the people around me’.

She believes the roots of her condition lie with her mother, who was terrified Valeria would grow up obese like her relatives. Even as a young child, her diet was curtailed

OAU graduates 78 first class degree holders

The Obafemi Awolowo University OAU, Ile-Ife, Osun State graduated no fewer than 78 first class degree holders at its 39th convocation ceremony held recently in the institution.

The Vice- Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Bamitale Omole, stated this on Thursday during the ceremony, which saw the conferment of 5, 249 first degrees and 3, 363 postgraduate degrees on students.

Mr. Omole while quoting from the latest Web-o-metric ranking, he affirmed that OAU ranked first in research among Nigerian universities, noting that the transparency, justice and integrity has been their watch word in the institution and will continue to be their guiding principles.

He said, “In furtherance to its claim as the number one IT university in Nigeria, OAU recently competed for and won a $2.7m Cloud Computing and Telepresence Facility. This achievement makes our university the only university in Nigeria with hi-tech facility.

“While other universities still use the iLab developed and made by MIT, OAU has developed her own iLab and this has helped us in solving some of the basic needs of experimentation.”

Omole however challenged the graduates to be steadfast and offer solutions to the challenges of life, assuring that the rigorous training by OAU will be very useful to the graduates in the nearest future.

“As graduates of Ife, we expect you to come up with innovative ideas in job creation and entrepreneurial
skills which will stand you in good stead in settling down quickly to making your marks in national development,”

The institution graduated 78 first class holders, 1,161 second class upper, 2,260 second class lower degrees and 877 third class degrees.

Oil thieves killed in Lagos pipeline fire

Scores of oil thieves were yesterday feared to have been burnt to death, while scooping fuel at a site of vandalised pipeline in Ije-Ododo, near Ijegun in Iba Local Council Development Area of Lagos, when an NNPC oil pipeline exploded. A witness said the raging fire started when about 30 oil thieves loaded in two canoes arrived the scene and started scooping fuel into hundreds of 50 kilogramme jerry cans.

Daily Sun learnt that luck ran out on them, when a mysterious fire started and engulfed the environment, including the thieves, their jerry cans and other materials. The fire raged for several hours, as fire fighters stayed away from the scene of the inferno. Some men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC) and NNPC officials were at the scene to assess the situation.

The NSCDC officer who simply identified himself as Mr. Baiye said: “You can see that the fire is still raging. We can’t go far to examine the damaged pipeline or know the number of people killed because the pipeline is buried under water.” Residents of Ije-Ododo who spoke in separate interviews alleged that the suspected oil thieves who vandalised the pipeline conspired with the police in their nefarious activities. Confirming the incident, the Information Officer, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, for South West, Ibrahim Farinloye said NEMA was informed about the incident.

He said both state and federal firefighters were at the scene of the inferno but could not do much because it required a technical way to handle. However, residents of the community blamed the authority of the NNPC for the explosion. According to them, such explosion had become an annual ritual. They questioned the motive behind the withdrawal of security men guarding the pipeline facilities in Oke Agemo axis of the area.

According to the traditional ruler of the community, Alhaji Chief Tajudeen Suberu Ododo, the inability of firefighters to put off the fire was because of the inaccessible road to the scene. A resident, who identified himself as Isiaka Bello Ajadi told Daily Sun that: “The fire started around 10:00p.m on Monday night and it was very serious that many people started running away from the scene.” “Since 1996, we have been writing and appealing to NNPC to sandfill that road and links us with Abule Ado but they have refused to answer us. See what has happened now.”

Meanwhile many residents of the community have since Monday night been relocating from the scene of the incident for fear of escalation of the inferno, even as Fire Service men, National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) and Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) officials are still battling to put out the fire.

Principal quizzed for conducting virginity tests on pupils

From Punch
Principal, Ajuwon Senior High School, Ajuwon, Ifo Local Government Area, Ogun State, Rev. Olufunke Oladeojobi, has been quizzed by the police for allegedly conducting virginity tests on the pupils.
Oladeojobi, who was described as a strict disciplinarian, by her pupils called in a nurse and jointly carried out virginity tests on a group of 10 students last week Monday.
Imagine nonsense. See the rest after the cut...

It was further learnt that the principal did not seek the consent of the parents/guardians of the pupils before conducting the test on Senior Secondary School 1 pupils.
During the test, it was alleged that the principal and the nurse whose name could not be ascertained allegedly dipped their fingers into the pupils’ private parts.
After the exercise, which took place at the principal’s office, each of the pupils was given an exercise book.
A 15-year-old pupil, who identified herself simply as Ayo, said the principal came into the classroom on the day and announced that all female SSS 1 pupils should converge on the assembly ground.
She said the principal subsequently asked that those who had yet to lose their virginity should stand apart.
Ayo said, “We are over 600 in SSS 1 but only about 300 of us are females. Those of us that are virgins are 38 and we were matched into the principal’s office with the assistance of members of staff.
“They subsequently divided us into three groups of 10, 15 and 13 and I was in the second group. The principal later addressed us and threatened that any pupil who fails the test would have her name written in the school’s black book and would be suspended.”
Ayo said she became apprehensive when everyone who emerged from the office where the test was being carried out came out with a sad and disgusting look.
She said, “When my class captain emerged from the room, I asked her why anyone that came out of the office looked depressed? I was held spell bound when she told me that the principal and the nurse dipped their fingers in turns into their private parts, adding that she had started bleeding as a result of the penetration.
“Just as I was asking further questions from her, the principal dashed out of her office and announced that she had discovered one student who had lost her virginity out of the 10 students that were examined.
“She wrote her name on one of the notice boards in her office and ordered the rest of us to return to our various classes. Two of my friends who had similar experiences burst into tears as they narrated what happened.”
Thirteen-year-old SSS I pupil of the school, identified simply as Ujunwa,   said the principal was happy  that she was able to “catch a promiscuous pupil” as she felt proud to discuss it on the assembly ground the next day.
She, however, added that her joyous moments was soon short-lived when the parents of the 10 pupils stormed the school in protest against the development.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the pupils rebelled against Oladeojobi last Wednesday as they did a sit-in on the assembly ground protesting and demanding that she should be redeployed from the school.
It was gathered that it was the teachers’ intervention that calmed the pupils.
Ujunwa said, “The parents of the girl that was said to have lost her virginity who happens to be a member of the Press Club and the other nine parents besieged the school last Tuesday and Wednesday and queried our principal for conducting such an unauthorised test on their children.
“The parents then came with policemen attached to the Ajuwon Police Division where they had reported the incident on Thursday and arrested our principal.”
When our correspondent visited the school on Tuesday, the school had closed for the term while Oladeojobi’s office was shut. Her telephone rang out while a text message sent to her phone was not responded to.
When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer of Ajuwon Division, Mr. Waheed Yusuf, a Chief Superintendent of Police, confirmed the incident to our correspondent.
He said the investigation into the matter was still “ongoing” and declined further comment until “investigations were concluded.”
But, a policeman attached to the station who spoke on the condition of anonymity said Oladeojobi owned up to the incident.
He said, “She confessed that she conducted virginity tests on the pupils and that ‘she was trying to help them.’ We took her in for questioning on Thursday and Friday but she was not detained as my superiors were taking into consideration that she is a civil servant.
“We might have some problems if she (Oladeojobi) is to be charged to court for sexual assault because the matter was reported to the police late and no medical examination was immediately done on the affected pupils to use as a proof in the law court.”

Tips to healthy relationships

1.Communication is an indispensable part of any healthy relationship. Good communication includes listening, taking time to have a conversation, respecting others’ opinions even when you disagree, and being honest, open and understanding. Good communication is respectful and does not include yelling, blaming, threats, demands, name calling, or threatening suicide if your partner leaves. These are examples of verbal abuse.

2. Trust is the key to any healthy relationship. Trust is created by mutual concern, honest and open communication, and shared decision-making and goals. Trust can be destroyed with jealousy, lies, or hurting your partner physically or emotionally. Trust is not isolating your partner from family and friends, or frequently accusing your partner of infidelity. This is emotional abuse.

3. Respect is fundamental to a healthy relationship. Respect is shown by gratitude, kindness, openness, consideration, and listening. Respect does not include disregard for another’s views or ethnicity, or forcing your partner to do something she or he does not want to do. Respect is not shown by hitting, kicking, scratching or biting your partner. This is physical abuse.

4. Patience is the foundation of a healthy relationship. Patience is the willingness to wait for another, controlling one’s temper, and tolerating those who are different or have limited capabilities. Patience does not include verbal or physical harshness, demeaning or controlling behaviors, or using physical violence to punish or intimidate. This is physical abuse.

5. Cooperation is necessary for a healthy relationship. Cooperation is working together as equals when making decisions, sharing household tasks and contributing to the welfare of the children in the home. Cooperation does not include inequality of responsibilities, blaming one another for relationship problems, or lying about or controlling money matters.

6.Individuality is a source of richness in a relationship. Individuality is expressing yourself, having your own friends, interests and hobbies, being comfortable to voice your opinions without being criticized, and allowing your partner to do so as well. Individuality does not include threatening, coercing, or forcing your partner to comply with your intimate demands. This is intimate abuse.

7.Leading by example is important to raising a successful family. Being an example teaches respect, work ethic, and social appropriateness and is not saying negative things about your partner, using physical force to get what you want, or neglecting the needs of your dependents. This teaches children that abusive relationships are acceptable.

8.Accountability is crucial in building healthy relationships. Accountability is assuming responsibility for your own actions, being dependable, following through with commitments, paying your debts and being honest. Accountability is not blaming someone else for your actions, or lying about what you have or have not done. Accountability is not one partner spending or withholding money meant for bills, food, or rent. This is economic abuse.

9. Freedom is a major factor in healthy relationships. Freedom is feeling safe to build relationships on your own, or to seek education and employment. Freedom is not being confined in one’s actions and ideas, or being restricted from access to friends and family. This is isolation, a type of abuse.

10.Honesty is essential to a healthy relationship. Honesty involves truthfulness, having integrity and being able to admit when you are wrong. Hiding things from your partner, having secret relationships, engaging in manipulation or coercion, making light of abuse or saying it did not happen, and shifting responsibility for abusive behavior is not honesty. This is emotional abuse.
